Sam is a senior associate in our Disputes team.  He specialises in competition litigation has extensive experience acting on a broad range of complex, high-value claims, including class actions and group claims. He has advised claimants, defendants and interested parties (in the context of judicial review) in disputes relating to anti-competitive agreements, abuse of dominance and regulatory compliance. 

Sam has acted for clients across a wide span of regulated and non-regulated sectors, including postal services, telecommunications, retail, energy and transport. He has worked on several significant competition law claims.

Representative experience

Ongoing defence of Royal Mail in collective proceedings seeking circa £1 billion for purchasers of bulk mail, following on from Ofcom’s 2018 decision that Royal Mail abused its dominant position.

Defending Royal Mail in a follow-on damages claim for loss of profits brought by postal delivery company Whistl in respect of the 2018 Ofcom decision noted above.*

Acted for Royal Mail and BT in their successful follow-on damages claims in respect of the European Commission Trucks cartel decision, including successfully defending the trial judgment on appeal.*

Acted for various other corporate claimants in their claims in respect of the Trucks cartel including Dawsongroup, Enterprise-Rent-A-Car and Tesco.*

Represented Heathrow Airport Limited, successfully, in judicial review proceedings where it was alleged that the UK Government had adopted a state measure inducing an abuse of dominance.*

Acted for claimant National Grid in separate follow-on damages claims in respect of the Gas Insulated Switchgear and Power Cables cartels.*
