A senior associate in our Antitrust, Competition, and Economic Regulation (ACER) practice, John advises on all aspects of antitrust and competition law, with a particular focus on international merger control and the regulation of foreign direct investment. He has extensive experience in merger control proceedings with the UK Competition and Markets Authority, the European Commission and many other competition authorities worldwide.

John advises large global clients on merger control requirements and other regulatory oblgiations, working with authorities and local lawyers across a range of different jurisdictions and legal systems. John has experience guiding clients through the regulaotry aspects of a different transaction structures and across a range of industry sectors. John provides pragmatic solutions to coordinate competition obligations around the world to help clients close their deal in the most effective and streamlined way possible. 

John studied law (jurisprudence) at Pembroke College, Oxford University before taking the LPC at BPP Law School in London. He completed his training contract with Hogan Lovells in London. On qualification in 2013, John joined the Hogan Lovells team in Brussels, before returning to the UK team in 2016. John has also spent time on secondment with the Competition and Markets Authority's Phase 1 mergers team.

Representative experience

Advising Bottomline Technologies (DE) Inc in obtaining CMA unconditional Phase 2 merger clearance for its acquisition of certain assets from Experian Limited.

Advising IBM on its US$34 billion acquisition of Red Hat, including obtaining Phase 1 clearances in the EU and around the world for a transaction involving complex and nascent markets.

Advising DCC plc on UK and EU competition law compliance with respect to proposed transactions, collaborations and/or partnerships with other industry participants.

Advising IBM on merger control aspects of the sales of its US$1.5bn microelectronics (semiconductor) business to GlobalFoundries and its US$2.3bn x86 server business to Lenovo.

Acting for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to secure global antitrust merger approvals for the integration of Mitsubishi Hitachi Metals Machinery with Siemens MT.

Advising a leading technology company on joint ventures with major life sciences companies for the development of an e-health services and bio-electronic medicines.

Advising Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in respect of the competition aspects surrounding the establishment of an offshore wind turbines joint venture with Vestas.

Advising Foxconn on its acquisition of the Nokia feature phone manufacturing and distribution business from Microsoft.
