Hogan Lovells strengthens energy regulation and energy transition practice with two lateral hires

Press releases | 15 January 2025

Global law firm Hogan Lovells is expanding its Infrastructure, Energy, Resources and Projects team with a Senior Counsel and a Counsel at the Dusseldorf office. Dr Florian-Alexander Wesche will join the practice in February 2025; Katharina Rath will move to the Hogan Lovells team on 1 March. Both will become part of the integrated regulatory advisory practice. They previously worked for law firm Dentons.

"We are very pleased that Florian-Alexander Wesche and Katharina Rath have joined our team. Infrastructure and energy transition are among the biggest future topics of our time and Hogan Lovells advises on the most important transactions at the forefront of this booming sector. With the new additions, we are strengthening another important facet of our fully integrated practice for energy transition projects – namely in the area of energy regulation", said Dr Tobias Faber, partner and global head of the IERP practice.

"This reinforcement is a steady continuation of our strategy to be the leading tier-one practice in fully integrated advice for the infrastructure and energy transition sectors in Germany and it also shows our ambition to grow even further", says Dr Carla Luh, Head of the Finance and IERP practice in Germany.

Dr Florian-Alexander Wesche advises various market participants such as energy suppliers, clients from energy-intensive industries and investors on all aspects of energy law. He has extensive experience in the field of German and European energy regulation in the areas of electricity, natural gas, LNG and hydrogen as well as energy contract law, in particular the drafting of power purchase agreements and the amendment of energy supply and power plant contracts. He also specialises in e-mobility, battery storage and the smart meter roll-out.

Katharina Rath has already worked in the energy regulation team at Hogan Lovells and is now returning to her former workplace. She advises clients on all aspects of energy law, in particular energy regulation as well as energy law, renewable energies, and charging solutions for e-mobility. She also advises on legal issues in connection with national and European emissions trading systems and new energy technologies such as hydrogen.

The two new additions continue a long series of targeted lateral hires. A year ago, Hogan Lovells already brought in the two highly recognised partners and transaction specialists Dr Thomas Dörmer and Dr Tim Heitling together with their team as well as the two counsel Stipe Bojanic and Dr Alexander Wandt for the energy finance team. Partner Dr Torsten Rosenboom had previously joined the team and Maximilian Broermann was appointed as a new Infra M&A partner from within the firm. In addition, Dr Fabian Bonke was appointed partner at the Frankfurt office as of 1 January 2025. The large growth in personnel underlines the firm's holistic, market-leading position in the energy sector.
