Alex Rutherford advises clients on a range of complex data protection, cybersecurity and AI matters, focussing on providing pragmatic solutions. His experience includes helping companies develop global compliance and AI governance strategies (including participating in AI Governance Committees), providing strategic advice on the development and/or deployment of AI tools, negotiating data processing agreements, navigating corporate transactions, and assisting with data breach notifications.
Alex has been selected to attend secondments in Dubai, Amsterdam and most recently in Washington D.C. This experience has enabled Alex to understand and appreciate the global nature of privacy and AI projects. He particularly enjoys working on multi-jurisdictional matters, and developing business strategies in an evolving regulatory landscape.
Representative experience
Advising clients on AI governance strategies, including drafting policies, agreeements, transparency materials, representing businesses in AI Governance Committees, and liaising with stakeholders.
Undertaking comprehensive data protection impact assessments for clients, including in respect of AI tools/products.
Assisting global companies on handling data breach notifications with regulators/individuals, along with drafting communications to third party customers/vendors and the media.
Drafting and negotiating data processing and data sharing agreements.
Counselling clients on strategies to legitimise international data transfers, including drafting SCCs, intra-group/data transfer assessments, and drafting transfer risk assessments.
Assisting multinationals on assessing privacy compliance implications/risks involved in strategic acquisitions.
Advising companies on responding to data subject access requests.
