Janis Beckdorf advises clients in the areas of platform, media and data regulation as well as intellectual property law, including trademark, copyright and unfair competition matters. He uses his legal and IT background to represent companies in the e-commerce, IT, consumer goods and health sectors.

Janis has extensive experience in European and German regulation of digital services such as online platforms and marketplaces. He develops strategies and compliance solutions for online services, tailored to their business model and latest technologies, with a focus on relevant EU regulations such as the Digital Services Act (DSA), the Platform to Business Regulation (P2B Regulation) and the AI Act. His clients range from very large online platform providers, which are market leaders in their respective fields, to emerging start-ups. He also assists international clients with their global IP enforcement strategy and litigation, with a particular focus on trademark and copyright law.

Janis studied law at Bucerius Law School and the University of Michigan. He wrote his doctoral dissertation at the Interdisciplinary Doctoral College of the Department of Law and Computer Science at the University of Heidelberg, using methods from software engineering and network science to analyze legal complexity. During his legal clerkship, Janis worked inter alia in the legal team of a leading global technology company and for the Senate Office on the digital strategy of Hamburg. He gained practical IT and business experience by founding a software company and working for a major global strategy consultancy.

Representative experience

Advising several large and very large online platforms (VLOPs) on their EU Digital Services Act (DSA) implementation strategy and compliance. 

Advising gaming companies on their online regulatory compliance, including provider liability, safeguarding of minors, content moderation and transparency and reporting obligations. 

Strategic advice on provider liability, unfair competition and IP rights for leading online platforms, including marketplaces, booking sites, and gaming.
