Janis Beckedorf advises clients on platform, media, data, and AI regulation, as well as IP law and unfair competition matters. He helps them bring innovative services to market and develop global compliance programs. With his IT background, he represents clients in the gaming, e-commerce, entertainment, IT, consumer goods, and health sectors.

Janis has extensive experience in European and German regulations governing digital services such as games, online platforms, and marketplaces. He develops strategies and compliance solutions tailored to online services’ business models and the latest technologies, with a focus on relevant EU regulations such as the Digital Services Act (DSA), the Platform-to-Business Regulation (P2B Regulation), and the AI Act. His clients range from leading market players operating very large online platforms to emerging start-ups. He also assists international clients with global IP enforcement strategies and litigation, with a particular focus on trademark and copyright law.

Janis studied law at Bucerius Law School and the University of Michigan. He completed his doctoral dissertation at the Interdisciplinary Doctoral College of the Departments of Law and Computer Science at the University of Heidelberg, applying software engineering and network science methods to analyze legal complexity. During his legal clerkship, Janis worked, among other roles, in the legal team of a leading global technology company and for the Senate Office on Hamburg’s digital strategy. He gained practical IT and business experience by founding a software company.

Representative experience

Advising several large and very large online platforms (VLOPs) on their EU Digital Services Act (DSA) implementation strategy and compliance. 

Advising gaming companies on their online regulatory compliance, including provider liability, safeguarding of minors, content moderation and transparency and reporting obligations. 

Strategic advice on provider liability, unfair competition and IP rights for leading online platforms, including marketplaces, booking sites, and gaming.
