Nicholas Laneville helps clients resolve complex international matters.  Whether the problem involves domestic U.S. regulations or public international law, Nicholas finds solutions that meet clients' needs.  He has successfully assisted clients operating in multiple business sectors, including renewable energy, steel, aluminum, automotive, oil and gas, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and mining.

In the international trade arena, clients call upon Nicholas to assist with legal challenges involving trade remedies, customs, U.S. trade policy, and matters under the auspices of the World Trade Organization. In the realm of international arbitration, he helps states and investors resolve complex disputes under bilateral investment treaties, free trade agreements, and other international agreements.

Nicholas represents clients before U.S. courts, international arbitral tribunals, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the International Trade Commission, and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

While in law school, Nicholas interned at the U.S. Senate Finance Committee, working on international trade policy issues. He also interned at the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes, assisting investment arbitration tribunals in discharging their mandate. Nicholas also served as the senior articles editor for the American University International Law Review.

Representative experience

Through multi-forum litigation strategy, secured a multi-million dollar reduction in antidumping duty liability for a major international steel company.

Successfully defended against adverse parties intervening in litigation regarding Section 232 exclusions at both the CIT and CAFC, then successfully negotiated settlement of the same litigation.

Secured multiple Section 232 exclusions on behalf of various steel companies.

Represented a sovereign in a successful defense of an arbitral award in ICISD annulment proceeding. 

Representing solar manufacturers and importers in various proceedings before U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Commerce Department.

Successfully advocated for multiple exclusions of products from the list of items subject to duties under Section 301.

Helped design a negotiated solution to remove tariffs on solar panels from Canada following USMCA dispute settlement. 

Secured a complete victory for Korean manufacture in a U.S. antidumping investigation of tapered roller bearings from Korea.

Representing investors in legacy arbitration under NAFTA. 

Representing major steel companies in antidumping administrative reviews. 

Assisting clients to evaluate possible paths to duty-savings on imports, including under free trade agreements and preferential trade programs.
