Matt is an acclaimed leader in the sports law sector, and has been recognized as a "Sports and Betting MVP" by Law360, a "Power Player" by Sports Business Journal, and a "Sports, Gaming, and Entertainment Trailblazer" by the National Law Journal. Matt leads a diverse team of over 100 lawyers across 15 offices worldwide. Under his leadership, the Hogan Lovells sports group has been named Law360’s "Sports and Betting Group of the Year" in 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
Matt pioneered private equity investments in a number of different professional sports teams on behalf of both private equity investors and teams. He has represented multiple billionaires in connection with record-breaking sports transactions, including Joe Tsai, Mikhail Prokhorov, Rob Walton, Carrie Walton-Penner and Greg Penner, John Henry, Tom Gores, the Morgan Family, the Levine-Leichtman family and a high-profile consortium led by Josh Harris.
Matt is also the go-to M&A partner for companies such as Oracle, Roku, and UnitedHealthcare. He has an extensive list of transactions for strategic companies and private family funds, utilizing his transactional foundation to complete complex joint ventures, acquisitions, and strategic investments for some of the largest companies in the world.
In addition to Matt’s global sports leadership role, he is deputy head of the Hogan Lovells’ Americas Corporate & Finance practice and is responsible for driving the firm’s strategic vision and ensuring growth across all KPI metrics.
Matt is a nationally recognized thought leader, frequently sought out by national and international publications for his market leading experience and insights, presenting and writing on topics regarding sports and the law, including published articles, speaking events, and webinars.
