Jo-Ann Sagar

Jo-Ann has substantial experience practicing before the United States Supreme Court. She has secured grants of certiorari in many cases, including three cases last term. She has briefed several cases on the merits before the Supreme Court, including as Counsel of Record, and has filed numerous amicus briefs.
Prior to joining Hogan Lovells, Jo-Ann served as a law clerk for Justices Stephen Breyer, Brett Kavanaugh, and Ketanji Brown Jackson of the United States Supreme Court. Between her clerkships, Jo-Ann also gained significant experience in the federal government. She served as a Bristow Fellow in the Office of the Solicitor General at the United States Department of Justice. Jo-Ann also served as an attorney-adviser in the Office for Civil Rights at the Department of Health and Human Services.
Jo-Ann also maintains an active pro bono practice focusing on civil rights, criminal law, and prison conditions. She has led diverse teams in high-stakes impact litigation, successfully challenging federal regulations and State policies and practices. She has also handled individual representations, including successfully getting certiorari granted in multiple cases for incarcerated people.
Jo-Ann attended Harvard Law School, where she graduated cum laude and was President of the Board of Student Advisers.
Achieved a victory in merits case before the United States Supreme Court on behalf of plaintiffs challenging congressional redistricting plan under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
Achieved victory in merits case before the United States Supreme Court in favor of pharmaceutical company client on standing issue.
Secured a favorable brief from the Department of Justice after the United States Supreme Court called for the views of the Solicitor General.
Secured a grant of certiorari in a criminal case on a question that the United States Supreme Court had recently declined to review.
Successfully appealed and obtained reversal of a US$60 million jury damages award in the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
Second-chaired a major copyright appeal defending US$1 billion dollar verdict for rights holders in the United State Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit
