James Yates is a litigator and legal advisor focused on helping clients tackle complex legal challenges from pretrial all the way through trial.  He has extensive experience assisting clients who are defendants in cases involving mass / toxic tort, product liability, antitrust, and breach of contract allegations.  James also has experience representing clients on the plaintiff side in complex, “bet the company” litigation. 

James graduated with High Honors from The George Washington University Law School, where he served as an Executive Editor of The George Washington Law Review.  Prior to joining Hogan Lovells, James spent several years at an Am Law 10 firm in Washington, D.C. where he focused on trial litigation spanning various industries.  James also clerked for Judge Christopher C. Conner of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.

Representative experience

Counsel to global specialty pharmaceutical company in the defense of antitrust claims.

Represented defendant in a bellwether jury trial in the largest MDL in history, obtaining complete defense verdict on all counts.*

Represented natural gas company in claims against two companies whose container ships’ anchors struck the company’s pipeline.  Secured favorable pretrial settlement for client.*

Represented private equity firm in post-closing class action, which was successfully resolved at summary judgment and affirmed on appeal.*
