Katharina Rath advises clients on all aspects of energy law. Her work focuses on energy regulation, renewable energies (including storage solutions / BESS), district heating and e-mobility. She also advises on legal issues relating to the national and European emissions trading systems, Biomethane quota trading as well as new energy technologies like hydrogen. Her approach is to achieve a result that is both legally compliant and practicable. 

Before joining Hogan Lovells, Katharina worked as a lawyer for energy law in other international law firms, including a Big4. During a six-months secondment, she gained experience at a gas transmission system operator. As part of her legal clerkship, she worked at the Federal Network Agency on legal issues relating to energy regulation and renewable energies. Katharina regularly publishes on various energy law topics. 

Representative experience

Reviewing, drafting, advising and negotiating energy supply, procurement and transportation contracts (gas, electricity and district heating) for energy suppliers and purchasers.*

Advising a global leader in logistics real estate on regulatory and contractual aspects of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in Germany and several EU countries.*

Advising a start-up on repowering PV systems and participating in EEG tenders of the Federal Network Agency.*

Revision of the district heating price systems of suppliers, including implementation, and communication to customers.*

Advising a research institution on the tendering and negotiation of long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs).*

Advising a hospital group on energy purchase and gas, heat and electricity price brakes (Strom- und Gaspreisbremse) and the Natural Gas Heat Emergency Assistance Act (Erdgas-Wärme-Soforthilfegesetz).*

Advising hospitals on and negotiating of grid contracts (grid connection and grid usage contracts).*

Advising energy suppliers on issues relating to the EEG surcharge (including implementation of metering concepts, compliance with the EEG and exemptions).*
