For his work Steffen, can draw on a deep understanding of the telecoms, high-tech, automotive, renewable energy and life sciences industries. Steffen also guides clients through the pitfalls of trade secret litigation, the negotiation of licensing agreements and IP transactions. He has a wealth of knowledge on the new UPC. Since the court’s beginnings he is among the most active UPC representatives. He is also an author in Tilmann / Plassmann, Unified Patent Protection in Europe (Oxford University Press and C.H. Beck) and regularly lectures on the UPC.
JUVE, the leading German directory, has been listing Steffen for many years as "highly recommended" for patent litigation. Legal 500 2025 lists him as a leading partner for patent litigation for Germany. In 2023 he was named a World Intellectual Property Review Leader. Wirtschaftswoche listed him in 2017 as one of only 20 German lawyers for the "first league of patents in Germany".
Steffen heads our Munich patent litigation group. He also supervises our Responsible Business activities for Continental Europe. He studied law in Regensburg (Germany) and Paris (France). He received a Master's degree from the University of Oxford (UK) in 1999 and a Ph.D. in international procedural law in Germany in 2002.
